First & Central Labyrinth Coordinator

I am a native of New Castle County, but I didn’t know anything about First & Central Presbyterian Church until I got a job in downtown Wilmington and joined the Center City Chorale. I loved singing in the Chorale. It was fun, and it also gave me an opportunity to learn and grow as a musician. Some months later I moved into Wilmington. Looking for a new church home, I decided to see if First & Central might be a place for me to worship and learn and grow in spirit, as well. It was. I joined the chancel choir and met my husband here, and now, 23 years and two children later, First & Central is still a place where we sing, worship, learn, and grow.

I am so enthusiastic about our labyrinth because it is a powerful tool for personal spiritual practice. Within the broad subject of spirituality and religious expression, I guess we each find ourselves drawn to certain areas, and personal practice is of special interest to me. I think this can be a difficult area for church programs to address, since so much time and effort must be devoted to things that serve the congregation as a group. It can be hard to serve also the individual’s need for activity that is personal and solitary. But as individuals first, and community members second, our personal spiritual practice is a foundation for our other relationships, so I believe that we must have attention and support here, too. I am proud that First & Central attempts to serve both of these needs.

It is an honor and a challenge to succeed Glenda Anderson as coordinator of our labyrinth project. She dedicated immeasurable energy, knowledge, and personal commitment to the task of making the labyrinth available to everyone. We are thankful for all that she accomplished and wish her well in her retirement. I am personally grateful for her teaching and guidance, and I look forward to carrying on the work.
