and More on Green Delaware Activist Arrest Story
Party DE Statement on Citizen's Arrest
Recently a citizen of Delaware was arrested without just cause outside
the inaugural reception of Ruth Minner. Reports note that he was
there to observe and not to protest or perform other non-violent civil
While attendance of the inaugural reception was by invitation only,
the citizen activist was arrested across the street from the reception
in a public area of Legislative Hall where he was waiting peacefully.
Apparently the Minner administration did not want him even nearby because
he has been critical of Carper/Minner's environmental policies and on-going
catering to the wealthy at the expense of others.
The Green Party of Delaware, in solidarity with other pro-democracy
groups and members of the public, strongly condemns the Minner administration
for this citizen¹s arrest in his exercise of his constitutional rights
of assembly and free speech. Such un-democratic actions only serve
to squash public participation in a democracy starving for greater citizen
involvement. We, the Green Party of Delaware, urge the State
department of justice and Ruth Minner to issue an immediate apology to
this citizen activist and restitute him any costs incurred as a result
his unlawful arrest. We further ask that steps be taken to prevent
similar police actions in the future. The Green Party of Delaware
will continue to work with others to restore our government to one that
is "of, by and for the people".
