Alert #28

Help bury the incinerator

Port Penn, DE. June, 1998. Senate Bill 98, banning garbage incineration in the Delaware Coastal Zone, has passed the Delaware Senate. To become law, three more things must happen:

The House Environmental Management Committee must report out SB98;

The House of Representatives without any crippling amendments must pass SB98; and Governor Carper must sign SB98.

A committee hearing will be held on SB98 on Wednesday, June at 2:30 in Legislative Hall. Assuming favorable action by the Committee, only four days remain in the 139th General Assembly on which the Bill could be passed. If SB98 is not passed by June 30th, the entire process must begin again in January with a new General Assembly.

We are very pleased by the success of the anti-garbage incineration campaign, and are asking all Green Delaware members and supporters to make a special effort in the next two weeks to bring the campaign to a successful conclusion. Please help!

If you can, come to Legislative Hall in Dover to help lobby for SB98 and against garbage incineration. For more information call 834-3466.

Please call your representative and several others. Our message is simple: "Garbage incinerators are expensive, unhealthy and unnecessary. Experience with them in Delaware and elsewhere has been bad. They don't belong in our Coastal Zone (or anywhere else). Please support SB98."
