    Major General William Edmondstone MacLeod served with the 20th Bombay Native Infantry (N.I.) in the Mahee Kanta in 1839-40. He was present with the Field Force in the Scinde and Afghanistan from 1840 to 1843, and served as the Adjutant of the Light Battalion in the Advance on Kandahar in 1842.

    As a Captain, W. E. MacLeod served with the 20th Bombay N.I. in the Persian Expedition of 1856-1857, and was present at the landing at Hallilah Bay, the storming and capture of Reshire, bring his regiment out of action. He commanded his regiment at the surrender of Bushire, and was with its Head Quarters in the forced march on Borazjoon, at the occupation of the enemies entrenched camp , and at the night attack and battle of Khooshab (mentioned in despatches, Medal and Clasp).

    As a Lieutenant Colonel, W.E. MacLeod served as Assistant Adjutant General at Head Quarters, throughout the Abyssinian Expedition 1867-1868 under Lord Napier of Magdala. He was present at the battle of Arogee Ravine, and the storming and capture of Magadala (mentioned in despatches, and Brevet of Colonel).
