"His cadet papers record that he was born 26 Feb., that his father
had no occupation, but enjoyed his own property. He had attended Dundee
Grammar School, where he received a classical and commercial education, and
was recommended to the HEIC by John Innis, Esq., the Hon. W. Elphinstone
and his father.
"The career of Alexander Carnegy is very well documented. He was a
Major General in the 15th Native Infantry of the Bengal Army. He was first
received as a cadet in 1810, with recommendations from John Innis, Esq.,
the Hon. W. Elphinstone, and his father. He was admitted on 22 October
1811, rising to Ensign 20 August 1813. His lieutenancy is dated 1 November
1815; he was made Captain on 24 January 1826, Major on 26 February 1835,
Lieutenant Colonel (Bengal 36th Native Infantry) on 5 November 1841, Colonel
on 5 September 1851, and Major General on 28 November 1854.
"He served in the 1815 Nepal War as Ensign with the 2nd Batt'n, 11th
Reg't., Native Infantry; at Kumaon he won the India Medal at the capture
of Hathras. As a Lieutenant he served in the 3rd Mahratta War, and was later
posted as adjutant to the Romgarrah (Ramgarh) Battalion on 21 May 1821.
He was Adjutant to the 1/11 Native Infantry from Sept 1821 till Jan 1822.
His transfer to the 15th Native Infantry is dated May 1824, with whom he
saw the Siege and capture of Bhurtpore and earned a clasp to the India Medal.
He served in the Stud Department until 14 August 1834, and transferred to
the 27th Native Infantry on that date. He then served in the First Sikh
War, Ferozshahr, as Lieut-Col. commanding the 9th Brigade for which he earned
a medal. Transferring to the 36th Native Infantry in 1848 he commanded the
5th Brigade and fought in the Second Sikh War at Gujerat for which he received
a Medal. He transferred into the 24th Native Infantry Regiment in Nov 1851,
the 42nd in Mar 1852, commanding at Peshawar in June of that year, and
then to the 15th Reg't. in Oct 1852. "

India Office Libraryref. N/1/12/536 married to Isabella Don by license on 22 October 1823 at Ghazeepore, the ceremony being performed by the chaplain, William Palmer. He was a bachelor and a Lieutenant in the 11th Native Infantry Regiment H. C. She was described as a spinster, now of this station.

Warrant granting to Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Carnegy the dignity rank and privilege of an extra member of the Military division of the Third Class or Companion of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath. Victoria by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen Defender of the Faith and Sovereign of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath to Our Trusty and Wellbeloved Alexander Carnegy Esquire Lieutenant Colonel of the Bengal 36th Native Infantry Greeting: whereas we have thought fit by a special statute of Our said Order sealed with the seal of the same and bearing date at Our Court at Windsor the fifth day of this present month to nominate and appoint you to be an extra member of the Military division of the Third Class or Companion of Our said most Honorable Order of the Bath We do by these Presents grant unto you the dignity of a Companion of Our said Most Honorable Order and hereby authorize you to have hold and enjoy the said dignity and rank as an extra Member of the Military division of the Third Class or Companion of Our said Order with all and singular the privileges therunto belonging or appertaining to a member of the said class until the number of Ordinary Members thereof holding Commissions in the East India Company's Service being reduced by death or otherwise below the proportions fixed by Us you shall become an Ordinary Member of the said Class to all intents and purposes as fully as if you had been so appointed under this Our Warrant.

"Alexander CARNEGY, C.B., Major General H.M. Indian Army, widower of
Isabella DON. 1862, August 1st. 0 h. 15 min. a.m. at Meggetland near Edinburgh.
Parents: Patrick CARNEGY of Lour (dec'd) and Margaret CARNEGY (née
BOWER) (dec'd). Informant: P. CARNEGY, son, present. Cause: Hypochondriasis
& Albuminuria were the complaints for which he consulted me of 3 or
4 years standing. This death was sudden and the cause not satisfactorily
ascertained, as certified by Will. HENDERSON, M. D. on Aug. 6th 1862."
