Ensign John Barbzon Kemeys Tynte, 1st Battalion 5 th Fusiliers (Ens. by purchase 14 June 1864) served as a Midshipmen on the Flag-ship HMS Duke of Wellington in the Baltic in 1855 and was present at the Bombardment of Sweaborg, Finland in the Gulf of Finland. He is wearing the Baltic medal in this photograph.[1]

He purchased Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the 5 th Fusiliers on 12 October 1867. He disappears from the Army List in 1872. He had 7 years of service in 1871. The 1864 Dress Regulations state that the 5th Fusiliers wear a horsehair plume “red and white, the white uppermost. [2] The mourning band in the photograph is probably for the death of Queen Victoria’s husband Albert in 1861. The photograph was taken by Lambert Weston & Son of Dover and Folkstone c. 1864.

HMS Duke of Wellington photographed c.1880[3] HMS Duke of Wellington, screw ship of the line launched 1852, was the flagship of Sir Charles Napier, manning 131 guns, she served in the Portsmouth Dockyard Reserve as a depot ship and finally sold in 1904.

The glory of the old Duke of Wellington - the once famous flagship of Sir Charles Napier. Relegated to harbour service as one of the depot ships for berthing the men of the Portsmouth Dockyard Reserve, and shorn of her towering masts and trim square-set yards she looked very different from this picture taken in the latter half of the 19th century. The photograph shows the Duke in her last year of active service as flagship to the Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth, dressed in bunting in honour of the Queen's Birthday.[4]

[1] Note that in blue light photography the yellow center ribbon color of the Baltic Medal would appear darker than the light blue edges of the ribbon.
